چکیده

The Clinical Embryologist is committed to reporting accurate, significant and up-to-date information concerning issues of importance to clinical laboratory embryologists, andrologists and those professionals engaged in the field of human assisted reproductive technology (ART) and infertility medicine. Dear Readers, Our theme this issue is " New Discoveries " and discoveries can come from any aspect of life. We normally associate them with fundamental science or life-changing technology, however, in our case looking through a microscope can put us " eyeball to eyeball " with discoveries almost everyday. We can also make discoveries about our fellow embryologists and as promised I want to highlight one of our esteemed members of the Clinical Embryologist's editorial board. ELD (ABB) has been active in IVF and assisted reproductive technology (ART) since 1985. In fact, I first met David when we were both Fellows at " Barn Hall " in Walnut Creek, California, before the days of certification and regulations. What I discovered then was that he had a zest for life and unflagging energy in the laboratory. In those days, discoveries could and were made on a daily basis, just by observing each and every oocyte and resulting embryo in culture. As we have all learned over time; discoveries beget discoveries. Dr. Hill discovered early on that his academic path would be rigorous. He obtained his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from the California Polytechnic State University and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Connecticut. However, none of that has reduced this zest and energy and you can find him (when not in the lab) cruising Hollywood Blvd. in his new Corvette convertible or street biking on one of his two Harley Sportsers. If not there, then check Rincon for the last wetsuit riding the final wave. Now that's quite a discovery! In this issue of The Clinical Embryologist, there are two fine articles on the impact of oxidative stress and sperm function on embryo development. Dr. Ahsok Agarwal, Ph.D. and his colleagues at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation review their research and the literature to bring you a comprehensive look at the world of oxidative stress mechanisms and how they can influence embryonic Opinions expressed in each article are solely those of each signatory of that article and so may not or do not reflect the opinions of any unsigned Editorial Board member nor-unless he is an explicit …

I-12: Objective Embryo Assessment Utility of Time-Lapse

Background Traditionally, embryo incubation and assessment daily has been under a light microscope, these observations are inevitably restricted to specific times and considering that the development of the embryo is a dynamic process, several critical stages in between observations may go unnoticed. For this reason, the new technologies, time lapse monitoring, have focused on the research for ...

Fatal Uncomplicated Measles

Thus we have, in a very limited field of research, briefly touched upon the relationship of the purely descriptive and experimental embryologist as to the methods of approach which each has taken in searching for the truth. The former points out the difficult barriers in the path of his progress. His judgment ofter later proves to be amazingly accurate in spite of the limitations of the methods...

Using Microfluidics for Metabolic Monitoring of Single Embryo Cultures

In recent years, microfluidics has demonstrated novel methods of culturing and studying cells. Within welldefined volumes comparable to the sample of interest, media, nutrients or toxins may be precisely targeted to individual cells via diffusion or advection, enabled by integrated valves and pumps. Tools, which both enable a repeatable and systematic means of single embryo culture, as well as ...

Laboratory processing and intracytoplasmic sperm injection using epididymal and testicular spermatozoa: what can be done to improve outcomes?

There are two main reasons why sperm may be absent from semen. Obstructive azoospermia is the result of a blockage in the male reproductive tract; in this case, sperm are produced in the testicle but are trapped in the epididymis. Non-obstructive azoospermia is the result of severely impaired or non-existent sperm production. There are three different sperm-harvesting procedures that obstructiv...
